Fish the Merced River without mixing up Yosemite rules
Yosemite changed its fishing season in 2026. The Merced River inside Yosemite National Park is now open to fishing year-round, but the river still has strict gear and trout rules: artificial lures or flies, barbless hooks, zero harvest of rainbow trout, and separate rules for brown and brook trout.
Access also changes as you move west from Yosemite Valley through El Portal and into the BLM-managed Merced River corridor near Briceburg. This guide separates those jurisdictions before you cast.

Do you need a fishing license on the Merced River?

Do not buy a second-rod validation for this purpose
The 2026 Second Rod Validation costs $20.26, but CDFW specifically excludes waters where only artificial lures or barbless hooks may be used. Yosemite’s Merced River falls into that restricted category.

Yosemite’s NPS rule is only one layer
California fishing law still applies inside Yosemite except where the National Park Service imposes a more specific park restriction. Practical Merced River access from Yosemite Valley to Briceburg
Happy Isles / eastern Valley
This is the upper end of the developed Yosemite Valley river corridor. Parking in the Valley can fill early, so the practical approach is to park once and travel by shuttle/foot.
Good for: anglers already staying or parked in eastern Yosemite Valley.
Sentinel / Cathedral Beach corridor
NPS maps show Cathedral Beach and Sentinel Beach picnic areas along Southside Drive. Both provide nearby river access and restrooms. Picnic areas have their own closure hours.
Do not fish from bridges even where a bridge provides convenient river views.
El Capitan / western Valley
River access continues toward the west end of Yosemite Valley. In 2026, El Capitan Bridge construction can cause weekday delays and the connecting Valley Loop Trail over the bridge is closed on weekdays.
El Portal corridor
Highway 140 follows the Merced canyon west of Yosemite Valley. NPS’s current fishing page includes El Portal in the Merced River special-rule framework.
Confirm safe legal parking before leaving a vehicle; canyon shoulders are not automatically fishing pullouts.
Briceburg Put-In
BLM’s Briceburg Put-In sits where Highway 140 meets the Wild & Scenic Merced River, about 12 miles east of Mariposa. The site has parking, a boat launch, picnic area and restrooms.

Cable Rock / McCabe Flat corridor
Cable Rock is 1.4 miles down Briceburg River Road and has parallel parking, a vault toilet and river access. McCabe Flat is 2.3 miles downstream and combines camping with river access.
Once in the BLM corridor, verify the exact CDFW regulation for that river section rather than carrying Yosemite’s NPS rule downstream.
Briceburg gives you a different style of Merced River trip

Fishing is year-round now — access and river character are not
Winter
Fishing is legally open under the new 2026 Yosemite rule, but snow, ice, storms and road conditions can make access the limiting factor.
Spring snowmelt
Snowmelt can create cold, swift and dangerous river conditions. NPS warns visitors to avoid high-water banks, slippery rocks and difficult crossings.
Summer
Developed access is generally easier, but Valley parking and congestion become major trip-planning factors. Arrive early.
Fall
Flows are often much lower than during snowmelt. Check the USGS gauge and avoid stressing trout when water is unusually warm.
Use the Pohono Bridge gauge before stepping into the river
USGS monitoring station 11266500 — Merced River at Pohono Bridge near Yosemite publishes river-stage and discharge information. The data are provisional and may occasionally lag, so use the live graph rather than copying a number from an old fishing report.
Rising rapidly is more important to a wading decision than one isolated number.
Confirm when the most recent USGS observation was recorded.
River depth and current vary by channel. A gauge reading does not guarantee any crossing is safe.
The regulation changes depending on which trout is in your net
Rainbow trout
RELEASE ONLYNPS identifies rainbow trout as native at Yosemite’s lower elevations. In the covered Merced River, the 2026 rule sets zero bag and possession.
Release unharmed and avoid removing the fish from the water.
Brown trout

A fast release setup is more useful than a long photo session
- Use barbless hooks before the first cast rather than trying to modify tackle after hooking a fish.
- Have forceps/hemostats and a landing net ready before reaching the water.
- If the fish is a rainbow trout, keep it in the water while removing the hook.
- Minimize handling and release the fish where it was caught.
- If fish are showing excessive stress because of warm or poor conditions, ending the session is a reasonable conservation decision even though the legal season remains open.
Clean your waders before moving between Yosemite waters
Yosemite asks anglers, paddlers and boaters to inspect, clean, drain and dry gear before visiting. Clothing, footwear, nets and other items that contact water should be cleaned and dried before entering another waterbody.
Remove mud, plants and visible material.
Clean equipment that contacted water.
Remove trapped water from equipment.
Fully dry equipment before entering another drainage.
The hardest Yosemite fishing problem may be where you leave the car
Arrive early
NPS currently advises Yosemite Valley day visitors to arrive before roughly 8 a.m. during spring through fall because parking can fill.
Park once
Main Valley parking is available around Yosemite Village, Curry Village and Yosemite Falls. Moving the car between fishing reaches can leave you without another space.

If Yosemite crowds make the trip impractical

Natural bait is exactly what Yosemite prohibits.

For a Yosemite Merced trip, prepare barbless artificial tackle, plan to release every rainbow trout, carry valid license proof, check the Pohono gauge and current park conditions, then arrive early enough that parking does not become the reason you never reach the river.
