Silver Backup

Use Silver when Gull is crowded, June is windy, or you need stocked-trout access with nearby services.

June / Grant

Use June for boat/trolling scenery and Grant for space, shoreline exploring and better big-brown potential.

Rush Warning

Rush Creek has segment-specific rules. Some water is artificial-lure, barbless-hook, zero-trout water.

Morning: Gull

Start simple. Fish reachable edges before pressure, wind and family fatigue build.

Late Morning: Silver

If Gull slows, switch to Silver for stocked-trout tactics and nearby services.

Midday: June

Use June for scenery, boat rental, trolling or a family break. Do not force tight shore access.

Evening: Grant

Finish at Grant if you want bigger trout potential and lower-light fishing.

Enter from US 395

State Route 158 connects the Loop to US 395. First-timers usually understand the Loop best by entering the south junction and moving June → Gull → Silver → Grant.

North Junction Warning

Mono County notes the south junction generally remains open year-round, while the north junction closes with snow.

Check Before Driving

Use Caltrans QuickMap or call 1-800-427-7623 before opener, winter/spring, storms or early morning travel.

June Lake: Cover Water

Troll or use a boat when possible. If shore is crowded or awkward, move instead of burning the prime morning.

Gull: Fish Quiet Edges

Because Gull is compact, noise and pressure matter. Step away from obvious areas and fish small edges slowly.

Silver: Stocker + Structure

Start with simple stocked-trout tactics, then adjust to inlet influence, wind-blown edges and deeper water if bites slow.

Grant: Stronger Setup

Use slightly stronger line and low-light timing. Grant rewards anglers who cover water and do not fish like it is a tiny pond.

Rush: Legal First

Check bait/lure/hook/limit rules first. Then fish seams, pools, inlets and outlets with quiet footwork.

Wind Switch

If wind builds, switch banks, switch lakes or pause until evening. The Loop rewards mobility.

Fish Planting Schedule

Use CDFW’s official Fish Planting Schedule before travel. Plants can change because of weather, road, water and hatchery operations.

Mono County Stocking

Mono County announced $110,000 in 2026 stocking investment across 18 local waters, with planters and trophy trout starting in early April.

Fishmas 2026

Mono County announced the 2026 regular fishing season opener as April 25, 2026.

Trailering a Boat or Jet Ski?

• All trailered watercraft must be inspected before launching in Mono/Inyo County waters.
• Boaters must visit a Watercraft Inspection & Decontamination station.
• Cleared boats receive an Eastern Sierra Mussel Sticker.
• Residents are inspected annually; visitors are inspected monthly.
• Reinspection is required after entering water outside Mono/Inyo County.

Kayak, SUP, Float Tube or Waders?

• Non-trailered craft are generally excluded from mandatory inspection.
• Clean, Drain, Dry still matters for kayaks, float tubes, waders, nets and boots.
• Remove mud, plants and debris before leaving water.
• Drain any trapped water from gear.
• Dry gear before moving between lakes or creeks.

Start Small

Gull Lake is the easiest first stop because it is compact, close to town and less overwhelming than big water.

Use Simple Rigs

Use easy bait rigs, small spoons/spinners or simple bobber setups. Do not overcomplicate the first hour.

Plan Short Sessions

High elevation, cold mornings, sun and wind tire people quickly. A short good session beats a forced all-day grind.

Fish Early

Mornings usually give calmer water, easier parking, cooler temps and better focus before sightseeing traffic builds.

Move Fast

If a lake is slow after focused effort, move. The Loop’s biggest advantage is fast water-to-water adjustment.

Ask One Smart Question

At a marina or tackle shop, ask: “What depth and side today?” That answer is more valuable than old online reports.

Carry Two Line Plans

Bring light line for clear stocked-trout water and a stronger setup for Grant Lake or larger brown-trout targets.

Use Shade and Wind Edges

Morning shade, inlet influence and wind-blown food edges often matter more than obvious parking-lot spots.

Store Scented Items

Keep food, bait, trash and fish waste secured around campgrounds and resort areas, especially near Silver Lake.

Dress for Two Seasons

Eastern Sierra mornings can be cold and afternoons can burn. Pack warmth, sun protection and wind shell.

Creek Stealth Wins

On Rush Creek, slow down, stay low, avoid stomping banks and make fewer, better casts.

Rule Before Rig

Before fishing creek water, confirm bait/lure, hook and keep rules. A hot tactic is useless if illegal.

• Using bait where only artificial lures/barbless hooks are allowed.
• Assuming all Loop waters share one season and one limit.
• Using two rods where a second-rod validation does not apply.
