Pyramid Lake California Fishing: Access, Rules & Report

Entry notice

Recreation.gov lists an important notice that visitors must enter the recreation area between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.; no entry after 9 a.m. Verify before travel because notices can change.

No reservations for Emigrant day use

Emigrant Landing day use does not accept reservations. Recent notices describe boat/PWC access as first come, first served.

Emigrant directions

From Valencia, drive north on I-5, take Smokey Bear exit west, turn left on Pyramid Lake Road, and continue to the entrance kiosk.

Food storage

Recreation.gov warns bears frequent the area. Keep food in approved containers, especially when camping or picnicking.

No mooring

Emigrant Landing notices state no mooring is allowed and it is day use only. Do not plan an overnight boat tie-up there.

Water and toilets

Emigrant Landing has flush toilets and drinking water listed, but bring your own water anyway for heat, wind and family comfort.

Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

Start: points, rocky banks, shade, deeper breaks, transitions and wind-blown edges.

• Finesse plastics when the bite is pressured.
• Reaction baits when wind or low light activates fish.
• Move depth before changing lures repeatedly.

Striped Bass

Start: bait movement, birds, wind lanes, points, marina-area edges and deeper travel routes.

• Use shad-style swimbaits or spoons.
• Cut bait can save slower shore days.
• Low light often beats bright midday.

Rainbow Trout

Start: recent plant areas and cooler water after checking official plant updates.

• PowerBait for stationary shore fishing.
• Small spoons, spinners and mini jigs to search.
• Nightcrawlers for beginner/family setups.

Catfish, Bluegill & Crappie

Start: calmer legal shoreline, cover, bait zones and easy family-access areas.

• Nightcrawlers are the easiest multi-species bait.
• Use small hooks for bluegill and crappie.
• Check OEHHA before eating catfish.

Private Boat / PWC Checklist

• Call 661-777-2242 before towing.
• Use Emigrant Landing for the eight-lane boat ramp.
• Confirm current entry and launch conditions.
• Arrive with vessel clean, drained and dry.
• Remove standing water from bilge, livewell and compartments.
• Check wind, wakes, floating debris and near-shore obstacles.
• Do not plan Yellowbar until DWR reopens it.
• Watch lower-speed canyon areas used by kayaks/canoes.

Rental / Day-Use Checklist

• Ask if rentals are operating that day.
• Ask whether boat or PWC access is first come, first served.
• Ask about same-day wind cutoffs.
• Bring ID, payment, water, sun cover and phone battery.
• For family beach trips, consider Vaquero Beach.
• For fishing logistics, start at Emigrant Landing.
• Do not assume the same hours apply to visitor center, beach, ramp and rentals.

Los Alamos Campground

Los Alamos is the closest campground to Pyramid Lake and has 90 single-family sites plus 3 group sites.

Group site size

Each group site fits up to 40 guests and 10 vehicles. Single-family campsites are generally limited to 8 people and 2 vehicles.

Standard site fee note

Recreation.gov lists standard nonelectric sites at $26/night for up to 8 people, with an additional fee for extra people. Verify current fees before booking.

Bear warning

Bears frequent the area. Keep food in approved containers and avoid leaving bait, snacks or fish scraps loose at camp.

No RV hookups

Los Alamos has no RV hookups. It does have drinking water, flush toilets, dump station, volleyball courts and store access listed.

Camp tag priority

DWR says campers with a valid camp tag have priority to enter Pyramid Lake, but still recommends arriving at the marina early.

Wind and sudden waves

DWR warns about sudden waves from wind gusts and other watercraft. Fish earlier and avoid overcommitting in a kayak or rental boat when gusts rise.

Rockfall and landslide terrain

The lake is surrounded by steep terrain subject to active landslides and rockfalls, which can also generate unexpected waves.

Floating debris and obstacles

Watch for floating debris, submerged near-shore obstacles, wakes and changing water levels around banks and canyons.

Harmful algae check

DWR monitors SWP reservoirs for harmful algal blooms. Avoid scum, discolored water and posted warning areas.

Pet warning

DWR advises dog owners not to feed uncooked trout to dogs because of Salmon Poisoning Disease concerns. Keep dogs away from raw fish scraps.

Heat and shade plan

Bring more water than you think, shade, sunscreen and a cooler plan. Exposed banks can turn a good bite into a short family trip.

Filter out Nevada results

If a page talks about Lahontan cutthroat trout, tribal permits, ladder fishing or Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe rules, it is probably Nevada, not this California reservoir.

Use the correct exit

Use Smokey Bear Road for Emigrant Landing. Use Vista del Lago exit for the visitor center viewpoint.

Go early

Entry and first-come day-use/boat logistics reward early arrival. Late arrivals can lose the ramp, beach, rental or wind window.

Use wind, but respect it

Wind can push bait and activate bass/stripers, but it can also make boating, kayaking and family bank fishing uncomfortable or unsafe.

Do not chase old trout plants

A plant from weeks ago is not a reliable report. Check current stocking and keep a bass/striper backup plan.

Carry a backup bait plan

Nightcrawlers, PowerBait and legal cut bait can save a family day when artificials fail.

Dry small craft too

Clean/drain/dry is not only for big motorboats. Kayaks, paddle boards, buckets and wet gear can move invasive species.

Decide keep/release before the bite

Use the OEHHA table before you catch fish, not after. For children, black bass and stripers are “do not eat” species under the Pyramid advisory.

Confirm Emigrant Landing, entry notice, ramp, rentals and Yellowbar closure before driving.

Check conditions

Wind, wakes, debris, HAB warnings and steep-terrain hazards can change the plan quickly.

Carry proof

Most anglers age 16+ need California sport fishing license proof at Pyramid Lake.

Match species

Trout after plants and cooler water; bass and stripers around structure, bait and wind lanes.

Eat safely

Use OEHHA advice before keeping bass, stripers, catfish, trout, bullhead or panfish.
